I have made the choice, at least for this part of my life, to just enjoy and be happy. Maybe that spirit will catch on with the rest of my life. Not that I'm a pessimistic person, but I do have a tendency to be way too serious.

The fabric is from Spoonflower, and it just shouts look at me, let's play! I used craft wire to make the zigzags and added pressed glass and resin beads. I know this was done in February, but I NEED SPRING NOW!!!!

At least the sand hill cranes and red-winged blackbirds have returned. The snow is melting and daylight hours are longer. There is the promise of good times ahead.

January 2011

Hooray for BJP 2011. It has aken me some time to get started on BJP 2011, not for lack of ideas, but the lack of ability to edit and select ideas. I began by choosing several different fabric samples from Spoonflower.com, which was difficult because they have so many beautiful fabrics by wonderful designers. But I finally managed to narrow the choice down to 14 samples. One for every month with 2 left over.

I knew I wanted to do something different this year. 2008/09 was my first BJP year and I made a lampworked bead for each month as my inspiration. In 2010 I used 'found' objects donated by friends and family. This year the fabric is the inspiration, but I also have some other goals. The first is to just have fun and just try things, even if they might seem silly. Another is to revisit some of the bead embroidery stitches I learned the first year. Last year was all back and running stitch.

But the biggest challenge will be knowing when to stop. Last year was easy, I covered the whole piece. This year, I want to learn to look at my pieces and learn what 'finished' looks like.

Is January's piece finished? I'm not sure. It is balanced, not too crowded, has lots of movement. Let's just say it is a work in progress. I liked making the coiled wire coils, and planting them with 'feet'. The sun is an inspiration at this time of year, when we just don't get enough of it!

Thanks for looking...

2010 BJP finished in the nick of time!

I finally finished December's BJP piece, with almost 8 hours to spare! It was my goal to finish all 12 pieces in 2010, and I made it! Of course, I had to do 3 pieces in December alone, but it was still a lot of fun, and a nice break from the other pressures of the month.

This month's piece is obviously yellow, which I chose to beat back the gloom of winter. The little owl face is something I picked up somewhere, for some project once upon a time. It became my found object because I kept 'finding' it on my work table. The other little bit is a dried fruit pod from a sweet gum tree from my long time friend and exercise buddy, Barbara Shipman. The little spikes are very sharp--I got one in my foot, so I know they are! I imbedded this pod in hypo cement to tame the spikes.

I'm so lucky to have found this bead embroidery community. It has really enriched my life. I completed 12 pieces for 2008-009 and 12 for 2010. I'm looking forward to 2011, with a new approach and new challenges. Happy New Year everyone.

November BJP

I finished November's BJP piece yesterday, and started working on December's today. I'm determined to finish 2010 this month, because I'm looking forward to BJP 2011.

This piece features a purple crystal butterfly from my friend and fellow Friday beader Linda Carstens. The mauvey purple color scheme seems to let the butterfly shine even more. There are 6s, 8s, tiles, 11s, hexes, 15s and delicas, even some crystals. It is amazing what you can find in your bead stash! Do you see the little wire antennae?

Next year, I'm going to use some of my Czech beads, which hang on the side of my workspace shelf. I honestly don't know how the last two months passed without my noticing. I'm embarrassed to admit, but I didn't finish my October piece until today, with November and December still to go in the next 3 weeks or so. My only excuse is that I was chairing our beadmaker's guilld annual show and sale, which was two weeks ago.

I'm not worried about finishing the year, and our holiday preparations are pretty minimal these days, now that our son is an adult. So I'll have time to finish and plan for next year. I've got lots of new ideas, and am looking forward to another year.

This month's found oibjects were 2 little propellers my husband Charlie had bought for a model ship he planned to builld, and may still. I love the copper color and paired it with turquoise, and some great copper with verdigris finish. I really like that color combination. The design arose from the propellers, and imagining how the water might flow. Thanks for looking and enjoy!

September

I finished my September piece yesterday, just in the nick of time. The found object was a piece from an old bungee cord for a bicycle pack from fellow beadmaker and beader Sylvus Tarn. It had been well used and the cord is no longer stretchy. The rusted ring has a great patina and was a great inspiration for a brown/black palette. I had some 11's that shaded from black to brown and worked really well. Also some 8's that have a copper finish.

The image itself suggests different things to me, like when you look at the clouds. This tickles me, since seeing images in clouds was one of my favorite childhood pastime. I'm finished with August and it isn't even half gone. Part of the reason has been a lack of work (not good), but also lots of time to bead and catch up around the house (good). I started this piece Sunday and finished it today. I couln't put it down, it kept calling me. I think the reason is that I really love orange, in all its tones and hues. Think of a bag of orange beads of all different kinds and see if you can resist!

The shells are from my fellow beader and bead maker Anne Sheppard. She gave me several but I chose to use the small ones, so I could have more variety. I beaded the spiral in the center first, and did it completely free hand. I'm surprised it turned out so well! I think this piece is my favorite of the 20 pieces I've done for BJP. Don't you think it would make a nice design for fabric?

I used size 8's, 11's, Delicas and some tiny size 14 triangles. Those worked well as the initial bead around the shells.

July, gone but not forgotten!

I've finally finished the July piece. I didn't actually have the 'found' object until July 28th...so I think that is pretty good. The round glass stopper is from a perfume bottle from my friend Hollie Archdale, who is also the teacher/leader of the Friday bead class/group at Findings in Ann Arbor. We've been together with more or less the same people for several years, and have explored many facets of beadwork together. The warmth and support in this group is extraordinary, which I attribute to all of us, but most of all Hollie.

The color this month was blue, just like a perfect July sky. I was able to use some blue vintage Roses Montees that I bought at Bead & Button a couple of years ago. I loved the idea of working with some very old beads, and these were made in Czechoslovakia some years ago. I also snuck some bugles, cubes, lentils and pressed glass beads. Quite the grab bag of blue. I discovered I don't have that many seed beads in the medium to light blue range. Not sure why, but it did force me to use some different shapes this month.

I created a 'cradle' of size 15 beads, and glued the stopper on with E6000. It seems pretty well attached, and I really don't want to cover it with beads. It reflects the colors of the beads all around it so nicely!

Work has been very scarce lately, so I've almost finished August as well. Color is orange, so grab your sunglasses!

June is busting out all over!

June's piece was fun. The charm in the upper right is from my friend and appraisal mentor Cindi Brunell. She and I were both born on Wednesday, and neither of us feels like we 'are full of woe' as the old rhyme goes. This charm says 'Friday's child is loving and giving', and we think we are actually Friday children who were only born on Wednesday by accident. Her husband David provided the bulldog charm, which turned out to be particuarly appropriate, since we have a new dog in our home, to take the place of our darling Lucky, who died April 30.
The new mutt is named Murphy and he is mostly black lab. We got him from our local Humane Society. He was surrendered by his owner becauser her mother lost their home to foreclosure. Since my work involves appraising mostly foreclosed homes, this seems both sad and ironic. But he is truly a treasure and we are happy to share our home with him. He is 5 years old and is very well behaved. He sits, sits pretty (paws up) and comes when called. He is a real gentleman and I find he is slowly filling up that hole in my heart that Lucky left when she died.
The piece is darker in real life, in a mostly dark blue/maroon palette. I used some pearls and bugles, in addtion to delicas and seed beads. Thanks for looking!

Merry Month of May

I have finally finished May...and am about to start on June, so things aren't completely out of control yet. This piece was inspired by a piece of drift wood from my friend and fellow glass bead maker, Denise Billups Walker. The colors are all blue, and it looks more sparkly in real life. The wood was sawed in half by my husband, who seems to have a hand in most of these pieces.

I think this is the piece so far this year that I like the most. I like the repitition of the curves and the flipped symmetry of the design. The driftwood naturaly suggested a wave design, and I think I captured that. I figure if I just keep working at back-stitch, someday I'll be good at it!

June will be maroon with a small charm from Cindi Brunell. But since I enjoy many different media, I thought it might be fun to show some of my other work. This was a birthday present for my friend Karen, who is a real lover of interesting and wearable jewelry pieces. The vessel was made with PMC several years ago, just waiting for the right strap, which is made using a twisted herringbone technique. The picture was taken by my friend Sylvus, who is a WAY better photographer than I am!

I like working with PMC silver, but it has become way to expensive to play with. Thankfully we now have PMC bronze and copper, which are much more reasonable. I've been making buttons and will publish them after a I manage to photograph them.

April 2010

This piece is my favorite so far. It features a piece of coral my sister Teresa Honnold found years ago. My husband used a dremel tool to cut it in half, so it would have a flat back. It was not a pleasant smell and it took forever. But I ended up with 2 nice pieces of coral and will use the other one in some kind of project as a birthday present for my sister.

The shape of the coral inspired the flowing long green lines, like underwater sea weed. The color green is so appropriate for April and May in Michigan. All the grass and trees and bushes just burst with that life giving color. We've had a couple of days of rain, and when the sun comes out tomorrow the different shades and tones of green will be electric.

Since it almost mid-May, I better get started on it. I have a piece of drift wood from my friend Denise Billups-Walker, and blue will be the color.

March and April

March 2010

I was busy with work during March and April, and am just getting around to finishing and posting for those months. I actually had the March piece done some time ago, but just finished April today. I'm finding that I put less pressure on myself this year, which is a good thing to learn!

March's piece features a machined metal piece that comes from my friend and beady buddy Erin Hook, who found a big bin of them at her last place of work. The entire bin was being discarded as trash, and Erin thought they could make a great necklace, especially in the 'punk' style so popular now. They are actually pieces from a Ford transmission. How appropriate for a beader from Michigan! The color gray was interesting to work with and I consciously wanted the design to be angular and severe. The technical challenge was working around the space where the metal piece was going to be cradled. I added it last and secured it with beads.

I haven't actually looked at my first 4 pieces together, so I have no idea what overall impression they will send when all the pieces are done. It's all beads, so it is all good!

February is Amethyst

February's piece was wonderful fun, and went more smoothly than I expecteed. The three 'found' pieces are amethysts from my bead class friend, Pat Chipman, who says she found them near an amethyst mine she toured in Thunder Bay. Thank you Pat! They are perfect! I used fabric paint to color the Lacy's stiff stuff, and I think it makes a nice background. The pattern makes me think of ripples from a drop of water, or gravity fields. I'm not sure why so technical! I like following the thin line of beads running between the chips, and how it connects and divides.

I raided my stash for everything in the purple family, and used hexes, 15's, 11's, 8's, 6's, delicas and megatamas. I'm continuing with my goal to cover the entire space with beads, and practiced back stitch this month. Next month I want to try practicing couching, which I find very challenging. Several people are holding onto found pieces for me, so I'm eager to see them and pick the piece for March.

January at last!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_AAIumnpjkQs/S4CIOlcGEyI/AAAAAAAAAGw/NkRpIxY9UbE/s200/001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440498134013055778" />
Since I signed up for another year of the Bead Journal Project (thank you Robin!), I thought it appropriate to change the title of this blog from Bead Journal 2008 Reflections to just Bead Journal Reflections. I hope this project keeps going and going, just like the Energizer Bunny!

Of course, this is a new year, and a new project, so I've made some changes too. 2008/2009 was my first time with the BJP and it was wonderful. I think 2010 will also be a great year, but I'm a little bit more 'relaxed' about the project.

Case in point, I just finished January, and it is already almost the end of February! But I'm in good humor and having fun with the new year.

New year, new guidelines. I'm going in a new direction on this project. I've asked 12 friends for 'found' pieces that will be the focal for each month. And I'm going to do a monochromatic palette, and I'm having a blast! January was all white with an old battery from my husband as the found piece. He also bought me a lot of fabric paints to use with the pieces, for which I'm using Lacy's Stiff Stuff...and I'm going to cover the whole piece with beads. No more negative space for me!

I'm looking forward to starting February...amethysts from Thunder Bay!

I've managed to finish all 12 months of the BJP and I'm quite happy with the results. Finally June on the top right with July and August below.

I supposed I could say something about each piece, but the important thing for me is the variety and how well the pieces work together. I started each piece with an idea and a color of Ultra Suede. Then I made a lampworked bead or beads to be the inspiration or just be part of the design. People who look at the real piece enjoy figuring out which bead I made.

Now my challenge is to make some small circles to cover the corners and figure out how to mount and frame the piece. But I've got time, 4 months until the next BJP begins. Can't wait!

August Finished!

I had no trouble thinking of a theme and bead for August. I'm amazed, pleased and a little surprised that I've stuck with this project. So full circle seemed very fitting. The earth has made another journey around the sun, and all of us have traveled with it!

As with all my pieces, they are quite simple from a bead embroidery technical level, but I do have fun with the colors and making a lampwork bead to fit into the piece.

July...it is all about me! I prefer to work quietly in the background, picking up the pieces. I didn't want a big wedding, I would never want to be on a TV game show, and I sure as heck would hate to be a politician. So my theme this month is a bit out of character! But I figure turning 60 is a thing to celebrate, so I made myself a cake with 60 candles. I didn't have a real cake because I don't need the calories, but this one was fun to make and I laughed as I made it.

The only sad part was missing a good friend Roberta, who died 3 years ago. She was always the one to make sure I had a 'zero' birthday party...30, 40, 50. But we had family visiting this weekend and went out to dinner Sunday, so I sort of had a party, and felt good within the loving thoughts of family and friends. Facebook has feature that reminds you of the birthdays of your friends, so I got lots of Happy Birthday wishes. What a great feature!

I'm really thrilled to have finished 11 months of the journal. I've been thinking about what I want to do next year. One idea, have friends and family each contribute a small 'found' object to incorporate in each piece. I want pieces to be a different shape and less representational. It is nice to have extra time to plan.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://margaretsutherland.blogspot.com/2009/07/julyit-is-all-about-me-lol.html' title='July...it is all about me! I now have 10 squares completed and I find that I don't really pre-plan too much. Every month is a different time and mood. June is all about peas and strawberries from our garden. They don't last long, so you have to enjoy them while you can, or freeze them. We have snow peas, sugar snap peas and garden peas, so picking has been an every other day event.

I'm lucky to live where we can have a big garden, and to have a husband who likes to do most of the work in the vegetable garden. I'm in charge of the flower beds, and they are rather out of control this year. I look at pictures from a couple of years ago and wonder where all those huge plants came from. They aren't the dainty, neatly separated plantings I intended. When you have something in the garden that is easy to grow (daylilies, phlox, coneflowers, sedum, etc.) they develop a mind of their own. One of these days.

May 2009

Now I'm caught up, having finished May before the end of the month. There is a little strip of ground on the north side of our garage where we have planted ferns and trilliums. Every year they multiply, but slowly. Every year I vow to remember to water them but usually forget. I guess they don't mind a little benign neglect. I have a friend who only puts up with very hardy plants in her garden. If they take too much fussing, she doesn't want them. Of course her definition of not fussing is way more attentive than mine, so I'm glad these early spring wonders just grow all by themselves. I hope everyone is enjoying May, the best month of the year, in my opinion!

April

April is wonderful.. Everyday you look for what is newly in bloom, forsythia and daffodils, and of course dandelions. This piece was rather intentionally done in a child-like primitive style. The sun in the corner, the generic flower. But the forsythia is pretty real as are the rain drops. At the end of the month we are really into spring, waiting for each new bloom and weeding those pesky dandelions. I finished this piece in May, but my mood is still pure April...fresh, excited and forward looking. Spring is just amazing!

I'm so grateful that Robin sponsors this project. I've learned so much, more than I can really put into words. (I guess that is why it is a visual journal...duh) My first 7 pieces look like this, with April still empty but planned and May just a glimmer of color.

Blue February

I love hearts and have made them with PMC, wire, seed beads, crystals and glass, like in my February journal piece. February is a big transition month...at the beginning of the month I'm still feeling the winter blues, thus a blue heart, not a red one! The heart is made with Effetre white and periwinkle, a really lovely glass color to work with. Not too drippy, not too stiff. I wanted to keep this piece simple and just echo the glass heart in blues and whites.

By the end of February there are sign of spring. We have a large pond with cattails that is a prime red wing blackbird haven and we always see them return the first week of March. Right on schedule we saw the first one yesterday. They haven't begun their territorial vocalizing yet, but that will be next. I also start imagining the gathering energy in the roots of my perennials, just waiting for the soil to warm up a little. Can you tell I like spring?

January

Snowflakes all over the place! We've had a near record snowfall so far this season, and snowflakes were a natural theme. It was fun to make so many varieties of snowflakes. The lampworked snowflake on the right was an easy disk with built up dots of clear and white. I thought about etching it, but left it shiny. I actually made 2, and used the other for a friend's birthday necklace. I'll have to borrow it back and take a picture.

I was a little concerned about this piece being so monochromatic, but I figure that this month is pretty monochromatic! Plus, when I get all the pieces joined, this piece might provide a little rest for the eyes, since my other pieces have plenty of color.

I'm still debating February. I could do hearts, and that would challenge me to make some lampworked hearts. I'm a little late getting started, but I'll catch up, I promise! I was busy in January helping our beadmakers group plan our annual retreat. We took over a bed&breakfast in Kalamazoo, and also had the wonderful facilities of the West Michigan Glass Society. It was the most fun I've had in a long time. We just played for almost 3 days, with member taught classes, evening workshops and lots of laughter. This was our 3rd year sponsoring the retreat, and each year gets better. We've already booked next year!

What a winter it has been. Large snowfalls, most of which is still on the ground. I imagine we'll be close to a record for the season. Our driveway curves and goes up hill, and has beaten more than one poor driver! But snow is supposed to be a good insulator for the perennial garden, so it can stay until the really cold weather is done.

This piece looks a little dark, and it is very monochromatic. I wanted a variety of snowflaks, just like you see on a snowy day. The lampworked bead on the right side middle is just a disk with white and clear dots built up. I made another one that I used for a friend's birthday present. I'll have to borrow it and take a picture. It was simple and lovely.

Finally finished December's piece. December is a month of renewal for me...the winter solstice is just a date, but I KNOW that more daylight will be slowing accumulating. There is darkness and there is light. I crave the light.

Two days ago we had almost spring-like weather, and the ice on our driveway (curvy and uphill) melted. (We've had more than a foot of snow so far this winter!) I spent time outside cleaning up 'presents' from my dog Lucky. It was wonderful.

The other fun part of this piece was getting to use charlottes. These little bitty beads are so beautiful. I collect them with no idea how I will use them. Not many bead projects call for charlottes...but I wish they did. So tiny, so fascinating. After working those tiny wonders, even 11's and 8's see HUGE. That might be my challenge next month!

This is my finished November piece. It will be joined to the bottom of the September and October pieces, essentially completing the fall season. It is the most representational of my 3 pieces so far, which has gotten mixed reactions from people. Some like it best of the 3, some like it the least. I'm in the latter group. I had fun practicing (not making perfect yet by any means) satin stitch, and placing the leaves. My inspiration was the view out of our breakfast room window, looking at a 22 year old crab apple tree. The window frames it like that, with the trunk off center, which I really like. My husband also built me a compost bin for leaves, which will break down into little bits and enrich my gardens next summer.

November is a bleak month, but we've had some unusually sunny days, which makes it much more tolerable. The short days are really hard, but at least it's only 21 days to the winter solstice. (but who's counting?) I try to remember to live in the present, not the past or the future. I think the journal project has helped me be more aware of the joys in each day, even the little ones.

Not a great photograph, but something I started before the BJP. My first bead embroidery, a purse with input from many beloved people. My sister Teresa helped me pick out the fabric, the french bead lavender flowers with help fromSylvus Tarn, the green ribbon from Anne Sheppard, the ideas and embroidery help from Hollie Archdale, sewing help from Pat Chipman. I've made a kumihimo handle, but am not happy and will try to make one with more weight. It is such a girlie purse, and very unlike me! But I love the design. But, I have managed to back, edge and join my first 2 pieces for September and October. I backed them with the same color ultrasuede and joined them with a picot in ivory, hoping that color will work for all 12 months. Then I joined the 2 pieces with right angle weave. Amazing how picot edges are just ripe for right angle weave! It isn't difficult to match the picots, even if there are an unequal number. It is an opportunity to do something with no specific goal or obligation, expressing something that is usually beyond words. This piece has a spiral lampwork disc in brown as the focal, with circles and vines flowing from it. I like the pumpkin color and the various shades of brown, beige and orange. I have no formal training in design, but lots of art history classes many, many years ago! So I think about balance, contrast, texture, movement--but visually, not with words. I used pale green ultrasuede with a variety of seed beads in my stash. The glass leaf in the bottom left is one of my lamp worked beads, and I think it turned out pretty well. Obviously I'm still a beginner at bead embroidery, but this piece did teach me a lot. It was fun making the outline stitch curve, and the netted bezel for the glass beads. I'm planning to stich the pieces for each month together using some sort of seed bead stich, maybe right angle weave. Still to be determined!

My friend Sylvus photographed this for me. I am really enjoying the rhythm of this project. I usually try to work on it early in the morning (7 a.m. at our house) for 30 or 45 minutes, before the day gets busy. This is my meditative time, when I really appreciate the journal part of this project. I think about the themes I'm trying to illustrate and what is going on in my mental landscape.

I've adopted a few strategies. I have several books on bead embroidery and am trying to focus on a few pages each month, really learning the stitches and techniques I might have just glanced at before, thinking 'I get that'. But you don't really GET it until you do it, several times. So I'm really learning at a basic level.

Also, since I like to make lampworked glass beads, I've decided to incorporate at least one bead each month, and am trying different bezeling (sp?) techniques. I'm focusing on netting this month...who knows what I'll try in October. Also, I'm finding I don't won't to fill up my entire square (3.5 inches). I like the negative space, especially since I'm using ultrasuede and the colors are beautiful. This month my color is a light pear green.

Finally, a fun story. I was meeting a friend for lunch yesterday. Coincidentally, Susan, who has an exhibit of her 2007 project at Findings in October was there and stopped by to see what I was working on. I told her that her project had inspired me to sign up for the 2008 project! What a thrill!I'm looking forward to October...theme will be circles.

I'll post a picture next week, when I expect to finish this first piecel.

BJP 2008 begins

This is my first post. The Bead Journal Project for 2008 was a welcome opportunity for me. I love the idea of journaling without words (so why the blog? lol). The upcoming year will have many personal challenges for me, family and close friends. I'm hoping the time spent letting the beads talk to me on my little 3.5 inch squares will help me sort them out and understand them. I'm about half way finished with my first piece and find the time I spend working on it very meditative.

I'm not an experienced bead embroiderer, though I am experienced with most seed bead stitches and always have several projects underway. I also make glass beads, work with PMC and wire and hope I can incorporate some unusual components as the months go by.

September's theme is leaves, since we start to notice that the leaves are changing and starting to say good-bye to us, just as we have to say good-bye to many of life's best treasures, friends, relatives, youth. The flip side is that this is also a time of beginnings. I'll see how that plays out.
